My Wife and I were looking at and test drove the new GC Summit Diesel and loved it. We are ready to order one but I started to read Recalls, electrical problems with the display, and a engine wire harness issue that put the Jeep in "limp Mode" (30 mph)...I kept reading and hearing the horror stories of these new Jeep owners, most of which regret their purchase.

Has anyone had issues with their GC Diesel?
Thanks

3200 trouble free miles on my Overland. With the super cold and deep snow this last tank of fuel was the worst for mileage at 21.89 MPG hand calculated. The recall for the display and electrical ground should not be an issue on any new orders and the recalls from what I read were rather simple fixes. The display was a flash. Haven't read any horror stories though.

No issue here either. 2600 miles. Last few weeks have been doing mainly shorter trips and in town driving, avg MPG in the mid 25s. Definitely still very much liking the ride and frankly we seem to like it more and more the more we drive it.

One thing to keep in mind is even if you find 10 different individuals that have has issues on the forums, this still represents are tiny proportion of the vehicles being sold. Granted, it may be a higher proportion than for the Pentastar or Hemi because there are certainly less diesels hitting the road, but it's still pretty safe to assume that the majority of vehicles are trouble free. I don't like seeing all the issues either and it does worry me that something could be lurking, but as I said, not a single issue so far and we really like it.

No one builds a problem-free vehicle. A problem only becomes a "horror story" when the dealer or manufacturer cannot fix it and you make it one. That can happen with any vehicle.

I had a 98 GC that went back under my state's lemon law at 1.5 years old and with 17000 miles. The dealer made every attempt to track the problem down and fix it with no luck. Chrysler stood behind the vehicle and I'm still driving Jeeps to this day. As they say, poop happens.

Picked up ours in late December. Later production had elecrical ground strap tightened and update FLASH done before it left Ohio. My dealer double checked before pickup. Have 1700 miles w/no problems. Try to use diesel from brand name gas stations (Exxon, Shell, BP) with high sales volume. Truck stop prices are low, but seem to have minimum 40 cetane ratings (European cetane standard is higher than 40). Pick up some DEF @ Walmart for reserve.

Went to pick up my Jeep yesterday (traded in my '08 diesel Overland) and did not get out of the parking lot. It did not come with skid plates and I had negotiated them into the deal. I am pretty sure there is an exhaust clearance issue as bringing it up from an idle to 1500 starts a noticeable vibration and noise which is worse when in motion. They gave me a Rubicon as a loaner that is a nicer ride than I thought it would be and am still waiting to hear from the dealer. I will update this situation when more is known about the source of this noise/vibration.

Wonderful vehicle, 5k miles. Limited w/ advanced technology 20" wheels and tow package. One initial quality defect fixed by dealer in 45 minutes (button to fuel door). Pure highway miles have averaged up to 31.5 mpg, my all in average is 26.5 mpg. Have refilled 6 gallons of DEF. Oil usage @ 50%. A few minor nits: takes longer than desired to connect to phone and load navigation, no front parking sensors (only available on top trim, I understand), could use a few more storage compartments (ie on dash), would prefer a cap on fuel tube (its capless...not a good thing when the fuel door won't close), optional crossbars on roof rack need tools to install and deinstall. The front collision/adaptive cruise control is terrific.

There is a difference between skid plates on a diesel or gas Jeep. Dealer took a plate off another diesel on the lot and problem cured,

Make sure your radio is running 14.05.03 (under information in settings). Updates are downloadable via USB from Chrysler. When running the latest version, it is one of the very fastest in the industry.

I do believe the majority of vehicles will be capless soon. it provides no less protection than a cap as it is a properly air tight self seal.

Any details on how to do this update?
Thanks
btw, 6500 miles, absolutely love the diesel GC. Best new vehicle I have ever purchased. I'll keep it a long time (my diesel Liberty currently has 190,000K)

Love mine too...

Here is the site: https://rsur.extra.chrysler.com/rsur/Uconnect.do

Works best with Internet Explorer 9 or Safari. If using IE10 you will need to add Chrysler.com as a trusted site sometimes. All you need is your VIN and a USB stick between 4 and 16GB that is COMPLETELY empty.

If you have issues, let me know.

A new problem is developing in JGCs manufactured in March and April 2013. In some models, the front left or front right CV boots are failing and slinging grease everywhere. Some vehicles like mine are having problems with the CV boots on both front sides. The WK2 Grand Cherokee Forum on the Jeep Forum site has and extensive number of postings about this issue. It calls for replacement of whichever front half axle is slinging grease. I will be going to the dealer on Monday to see what happens. I have just over 500 miles on my Jeep. Love the vehicle and am hoping for a quick repair as I have a trailer trip planned soon.

The problem was caught by April 14th. What is the manufacturing date of your vehicle.

If you don't know you can PM me the last 8 of your VIN and I can find out.

Damn, I know my way around a computer (at least until the abomination known as windows 8), but when I install the Akami interface it all sort of disappears. I can't even find the Akami interface to run it!

Knox,
Can you tell me more about your vibration/skid plate issue? Since new mine has had a very loud reverberation (is what I'd call it) right around 1.4-1.6k rpm. It is very annoying, sounds like it is coming from the right lower engine bay but it's hard to pinpoint. I've found only 1 other mention of it and that was from a journalist's review of a diesel press loaner.
