Hi Folks,

I am brand new to the forums and want to start off thanking you. This is an awesome community with a huge wealth of knowledge and experience.

My wife and I are looking for a new SUV that she can drive every day, but can also pull our ski boat from time to time. After driving a bunch of stuff, the JGC Diesel came out as the clear front runner. After digging around on this site, I came across thread after thread and review after review of nothing but problems.

With that in mind, a few questions to get y'all's opinion on:

  • It seems like many of the threads have quieted down in the past 6 months to 1 year. With the fix of software, injectors, and cat, has this more or less resolved the major reliability problems on the diesel?

  • Are there any differences in reliability on the 2015 models that I should be aware of to warrant spending a little bit more?

  • It looks like a pretty good market of JGC's out there. We have been considering cars that are just out of warranty (~40k mile range), as it fits our budget a bit better, but have seen some in reason that would still be under warranty for a year or so. Is it better to look at the higher mileage car that perhaps has the kinks worked out, or trust in the bit of warranty that is left?

Again, I know much of this has been posted in various forms, but I really just want to get the pulse on the current state of reliability on these awesome SUV's.

Thanks so much for the help!

Hello and welcome,
for out of warranty vehicle, I'll request service history and make sure that all the issues have been resolved. It is easy to reset the CEL and sell you vehicle with an appearance to be ok (just thinking the worst case scenario). The good news is, that you have a lot of options besides full cost of repair of the common issue. 1) getting aftermarket warranty 2) doing a EGR/DPF/SCR delete, as the majority of issues is related to them, which cost fraction of their repair/replacement

I personally went with aftermarket GDE tune, which eliminate EGR issues completely and DPF/SCR partially. So far 13000 miles on new 2015 and no issues.

Anyway, the exhaust warranty is 80k miles and power-train 100k miles, so you should be OK with 40k+.
Hope that helps!

Hi I am in a similar situation right now. I am looking to get a diesel for the same reasons above but am concerned with some of the issues. Had a similar thought about possibly spending some more for a 2015 if that meant less issues but have a 2014 in my sights that is currently at a great price. I am reluctant to go with the V8 as I would rather have the diesel but part of me reading about all the issues says get a second opinion/verification that the diesel is the way to go.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance
