I am about 6 months out from purchasing a vehicle and currently shopping the JGC and VW Touareg. I am torn between these 2 vehicles, One day I can talk myself into JGC and the next the VW. I like to keep my vehicles a long time, I am currently driving a 2004 Range Rover with 121k original owner miles. It seems that both vehicles hold their value about the same, the jeep may be a little less repair wise, but I plan to purchase extended warranty for either one I purchase.

I am just looking for some opinions from jeep owners.

Thanks
Marc

Well, I'm on my fifth JGC since they first came out in 1993. While no one builds a perfect vehicle I'd say I've had relatively few issues with all but my 98, which went back under my state's lemon law for a major drivetrain vibration. No hassle from Chrysler about it.

My 02 was the most dependable... outside of regular maintenance over almost 13 years and 120K+ miles I had a transfer case seal replaced twice. Paint still shined like a new penny after 13 winters worth of WI road salt... no rust.

All were fantastic in snow... especially with the Quadra-Drive setup, which by far is the best 4WD system I've ever used.

Quality wise I'd have to say that the 2014 is the best I've seen so far. Ride and handling much improved in the WK2 generation. Yes, there are some complaints with the electronics. I don't consider that to be too out of the ordinary since it has new electrical bus architecture this year. There will always be some bugs to work out with a change like that.

It's a vehicle I'd recommend to anyone.

I like the way the hitch connects to the frame on the jeep vs the VW. That and the fact I could put it in my driveway for less than 40k. Every review head to head or comparison I have read has put the Jeep ahead of the VW. But like most I'm capable of asking questions until I get the answers I want. It's only been a few months since the diesel jeep has been out in enough numbers to make an unbiased decision. You have the luxury of six months... And I like others on this forum will continue to post what I hope is data that will assist you. So the best advice I think I can give is stay tuned to this station.

Hi Marc,

I also am trying to decide between the JGC and Touareg. What did you end up doing and why?

Thanks,

Chad

I cross shopped both as well and ended up with the JCG diesel. What I loved about the VW were: interior quality was much better, quieter on freeway and around town, better rear end design, better seats and it drove more car like. What I didn't like was no low range, no cooled front seats, it was priced 11k more than my GC, but had less options (62k vs 51k), and the dealer would not budge on the price. Ended up getting my GC Limited diesel with LP2, tow package, nav, and off road adventure pack for 44k. I didn't see the value in paying 18k more for a less capable and less optioned vehicle. Maybe if I had more money I wouldn't care but I don't, so I do.
