There have been rumors floating around for a while that we might see a 7 or 8 speed tranny in the new Diesel.. That should really help increase the overall mpg. Thoughts?

its official that all new grand cherokees will have an 8spd transmission, geared toward different setting of-course. The grand cherokee diesel 4x2 will get 21city/30hw and 4x4 will get 20city/28hw with the 8spd transmission, it will also have a 7400lb two rating. hope this helps =)

There are actually two 8-speed autos that will be available in the Grand Cherokee:

The 845RE with the 3.6L engine and the ZF 8HP70 with the 3.0L, 5.7L and 6.4L engines.

There's 9 speeds coming out in other manufacturers.

The one complaint on the 8 speed now is that when you let off the gas it down shifts kinda quickly enough that you can feel it. However, the transmission somehow learns your driving style & after it breaks in it will be smoother. That's what I have been told anyways.

I notice a slight difference in the transmission shift pattern if I have Eco Mode engaged. With Eco Mode disengaged it's extremely smooth shifting... to the point that most of the time, the only way you know what gear it's in (up or down) is by the gear indicator number in the dash.
