Check Engine - DEF problems

We had the incorrect DEF message, again and check engine light again.
We are slightly over 15k miles. Our service center lost their diesel tech and sent us to another.
Wow, the new place really knows their stuff. Performed 4x updates that the previous people overlooked in the last couple of months.
All was fine, until the engine light returned with no messages???
All mopar branded DEF and all service by dealer.
Up side, my wife is reporting over 28 mpg since last service and updates!
Our oil and DEF still have lots of life and we are getting ready to pull 6,000 lbs 1500+ miles. What to do about that damn engine light?
The EVIC doesn't normally show a message when the CEL comes on. Only DEF and Regen issues have messages. You need an OBD2 scanner to check the codes if the CEL comes on. If you are getting a P20EE, you may have a failing Catalytic Converter. You need to get it diagnosed so you can get in line to wait for a new Cat...they are heavily back ordered since an improved Cat is being released soon. You can drive it in the meantime.

Well, I made it to the dealer with 5 miles left on message. After 2 days in shop I spoke with Service Manager and he told me that the Cat Converter is bad (they don't have a way of checking it!) and had to order it. Its on BackOrder with no release date!! What do I do now?? Is there anyway to see how long that B/O will take?? Cant they bypass CPU and let me drive it till it arrives?? What options do you think I have?? Any help with this would greatly be appreciated. Thanks,….
A bad Cat alone will not put your vehicle in limp mode. A DEF system failure is what caused the countdown. The DEF system clogs when the Cat starts to fail and the NOx sensor doesn't call for enough DEF flow. Low flow allows the DEF to chrystalizes and clog. The clogged DEF causes the countdown.

Have then clean, fix, and test your DEF system for flow. Flash the latest TSB which (I think) has changes to the DEF injection flow which prevents clogging. Once the DEF is functional, you can drive with a bad Cat. You will get a P20EE code that sets the CEL but causes no harm.

A redesigned Cat is coming. Last I heard it may be mid-Dec or later. Fix the DEF and drive it.

Hi all diesel owners
our 2014 went in again for MIL/check engine light. Code P225C-00.
There is a new SB 18-018-14 Rev D that came out on 17 October 2014.
Picked the car up, drove 50 miles, light back on.
Waiting for another appointment. This is becoming a weekly event.
4 incidents without resolution = Lemon Law eligibility in DE.
That code pertains to a bad NOx sensor. Have they changed the sensor yet? I suspect they were told to try the TSB first before swapping NOx sensors.

The new TSB corrects algorithms in the ECM related to emissions but...it doesn't "fix" a bad Catalytic Converter. I suspect the prior algorithm actual damages the Cat. Mine had to be replaced.

In gas engines, a poorly tuned fuel system due to a failed sensor can kill a Catalytic Converter. Its the #1 cause of cat failure. I suspect our diesels are somewhat the same. Too much EGR, overly rich conditions during regen, incorrect DEF dosage...could cause failure and I suspect they have made adjustments in the latest TSB.

I would advise getting the TSB as soon as possible.

You are dead on! In for CEL, again and code was P20EE. Service manager had a new Cat Converter marked for someone else, but installed it on ours due to all the issues and we are heading out for a long trip.
We have hardly used any DEF since last LOF when we then topped off with 8 gals. The service tech and manager stated all the stop/go daily commuting is not helping???

They also recommended getting a code reader, read the code an clear out if necessary.
WE are slightly over 16k miles and the CEL has been on more than off since purchasing.
We have had 2 LOF (lube, oil, filter) and topped off with only Mopar branded DEF.
FYI...latest recall is P64 Reprogram Steering Column released recently.

Seeking recommended code reader ASAP before trip in 2 days.

Where can I get the list of codes?
I recommend the Scanguage2 which is available at most auto parts stores (Autozone, Advanced Auto, etc). Its a guage you can locate in your center console.

As a bonus, You can program it to monitor the DPF temperature and watch when it is trying to regen the DPF. Short trips are rough on the DPF and SCR systems. I'd recommend a 20 minute highway trip every few days if possible. Otherwise the DPF will fill up with soot and not burn it off as designed.

As far as the DEF injector goes, be very careful about the quality of your DEF that you add. Make sure you don't introduce any impurities...not even a trace...into your DEF tank. The deionized solution will form chrystals if ANY ionized materials are introduced. Even water and air are ionized, meaning they have trace elements that conduct electricity. Wipe fill noozles clean and don't leave the DEF cap off for any longer than necessary.

I'm back in the shop after the "MegaFlash" and new DEF Injector. Got about 200 miles and the MIL came back on. I'll post the issue once I hear from the dealer. Reopened the STAR case.

Question - Where do you go to meet fellow EcoDiesel owners?
Answer - Your dealer's service write up desk!

Just trying to keep a good mood....

Frank
Bad Catalytic Converter. Just about guarantee its the P20EE code. Its ok to drive it if you have to wait on a Cat.

Everyone having problems with the eco diesel needs to open a star case with jeep. Mine has been in the shop since 10 October. My case manager says there hasent been many problems reported. I am just over 10k and i think all Eco diesels will start having the DEF issues.
Your Case Manager is uninformed or lying There are tons of complaints and issues regarding DEF warnings and P20EE codes. This forum is pretty dead. Check a forum with more owners and you can read for days.

The Catalytic converter design is faulty on all 2014's and the DEF system is prone to clog. My service fiasco lasted 72 days. I have 26k miles now and all is well but at 20k, I had a "Bad DEF See Dealer", then a "no start in 200 miles countdown" and P20EE codes. A DEF pump and Injector, DEF system cleaning and refill, and finally a new Cat fixed everything. Part of the delay was due to the dealer, in all fairness.

A new Cat design is coming. Many are reporting that repairs are being delayed until then. If you only have a bad Cat, drive it. The CEL from a P20EE is not harmful.

I am still having issues with the DEF warning messages after 3 times in the shop. Last week they replaced the DEF Injector, flushed out the DEF Tank and lines and filled, I mean FILLED my DEF tank to its maximum capacity after I told them not too. On my way home last week CIL is on with same message. Engine will not restart xxx miles. Right now it says 14 miles before engine will not restart. Does anyone know what will happen when this reaches 0 (zero)?? I need to take it back AGAIN but have not had time to drop it off.
You can drive past 0 on the countdown, you just can't restart. Might want to make your next trip a dealer visit.

They haven't solved the DEF issue yet. Have them perform a flow test. If it flows DEF through the injector to spec, you may have a bad sensor. Otherwise, if it's flowing to spec, you should be ok.

Frank, sounds like your dealer knows their stuff. The DEF flow test is the right diagnostic and I am impressed that they communicated the results to you.

Let us know if you notice any changes in operation with all the updates. I've had all of them except the latest ECM rev D emmisions update that was just released. You may notice your shift points have changed based on torque demand. Mine downshifts sooner instead of holding a higher gear when I accelerate. Some like it, some don't.

You must report a symptom that a TSB addresses to have it applied unless it is classified as an RRT. Then it is required. Some dealers will provide the reason for you and apply all TSBs just to keep you updated and generate billable shop time. I consider those techs as the good guys.

The latest ECM TSB is emissions related and an "RRT" which means ALL diesels get it. They should have applied it since it was in the shop. Maybe they misread the bulletin.

Are you guys with failed Catalytic Converters washing your Jeep' s underside with a high pressure sprayer or spraying water down the tailpipe while the tailpipe is hot? Look at the factory duels from behind and tell me where water will go if it enters the tailpipe. The pipes angle down to the Cat. If your vehicle was regening or just finished before you washed it, sudden quenching of the ceramic honeycomb structure which is still at 1200°F inside the Cat can cause it to crack. Go do some reading before you tell me otherwise. Thermal stress is one of the top reasons a Cat can fail prematurely.

There has to be a reason our Catalytic Converters are dying at this rate.

Guys, get a code reader. If you are getting a P20EE intermitantly, you most likely have a Catalytic Converter that is operating marginally. It will clear after a few drive cycles then return since it is barely passing the onboard diagnostic test which occur as you drive.

This is a documented issue. Jeep is aware of it.

Update: Mine was fixed with a Catilytic Converter replacement. They also replaced a bad DEF pump.and DEF injector that was clogged with DEF chrystals, and drained/cleaned the DEF tank and lines.

I've driven 1000 miles error free so I think I am out.of the woods on this issue.
