Check Engine - DEF problems

I've had my 2014 in 4 times on check engine light. Showing exhaust system codes. They went through entire DEF system and finally found crystals in or near DEF injector. Replaced injector. Only made it 40 miles before Ck engine is back on. Headed back to dealer this week. Started all this at maybe 3000 miles. 7400 miles now. Thoughts? Others experiencing this?

The P20EE or NOx code comes on in about 250 mile increments (one time skipping one and coming on at 500)...... depending on how I am driving. I think it coincides with regens. They did not start until about 8000 miles. I had the "mid-October upgrade" but the code was back in just under 500. The only thing that seems to be affected by this code is remote start. If I leave the code up it will go out by itself. But I log it in pad I keep in the jeep then reset it with my OBDII reader which I also keep in the jeep. I am going to wait and watch a little longer before I go back to the dealer.

I am getting fed up with mine. Have had it only 1 year. Halloween, while driving on the freeway out of town, my MIL came on. Well scared the crap out of me. Husband said go to nearest Jeep dealership to see if they can help. Needless to say, they were worthless and not helpful at all after I had to go in and SEARCH for a Service Adviser. Ended up calling my dealership where we purchased it, talked to a nice SA and he said as long as it wasn't blinking, it was good to drive until I could get it into their shop that following Monday. I did as little driving as possible while out of town and it was on when I drove home. I made one stop and came back out and the light was no longer on any more. Still took it into the dealership for that issue, as well as they didn't reset the Oil Change indicator. They checked codes, they did this and that. Updated the software and said you are good to go. Well, they didn't reset the darned oil change indicator. And When I got on the freeway Saturday afternoon, at highway speeds, the danged MIL came on again. Stayed on until I got to work this morning. It was not on when I went to lunch.

This is just frustrating. I can't afford to continually drop it off the shop, have my hubby run me to work and come get me when we work in the opposite directions. And I kinda like my job so I really don't need to miss work or be late.

We had the incorrect DEF message, again and check engine light again.
We are slightly over 15k miles. Our service center lost their diesel tech and sent us to another.
Wow, the new place really knows their stuff. Performed 4x updates that the previous people overlooked in the last couple of months.
All was fine, until the engine light returned with no messages???
All mopar branded DEF and all service by dealer.
Up side, my wife is reporting over 28 mpg since last service and updates!
Our oil and DEF still have lots of life and we are getting ready to pull 6,000 lbs 1500+ miles. What to do about that damn engine light?

The EVIC doesn't normally show a message when the CEL comes on. Only DEF and Regen issues have messages. You need an OBD2 scanner to check the codes if the CEL comes on. If you are getting a P20EE, you may have a failing Catalytic Converter. You need to get it diagnosed so you can get in line to wait for a new Cat...they are heavily back ordered since an improved Cat is being released soon. You can drive it in the meantime.

We ordered our GC Diesel and received it in April 2014. Starting in the first week of October, the check engine light came on. Took it to the dealer and they said there was no code, so just simply just reset the light. A week later, it came back and there was some TSB that they received to update, update was done, still no code from the light. The 3rd time the light came on, the code was the Nox sensor, this was replaced and light was off. The fourth time it came on, didn't even drive 20 miles, took it back to the dealer and they did a regeneration. Had the vehicle back for only 7 days and the light came back on again this morning. Spoke to the dealer to return vehicle back to shop tonight, they have a case open with Chrysler. Now it is getting real old to have to take a weekly visit to the dealer just when I thought it was fine. BTW, I have only 4600 miles on this vehicle.

Very similar to my experience. They slowly went through parts in the system replacing them until they replaced the catalytic converter and that got it. That was why I was in and out with it about 5 times. That may not have been sole cause as early on in the process they found crystals at the point the injector was injecting the DEF into somewhere. In any event if you let them keep going through it they should get it. My dealer gave me a loaner vehicle each time which helps. One issue is whether they have the parts. Some are back-ordered or not even produced yet. My dealer advocated strongly for me, particularly when I had a trip coming up and I told him that Chrysler could solve the parts problem if they wanted to by taking the parts off their production line which are "just in time" delivered to produce the next one of these or in the extreme Chrysler could instruct my dealer to take the parts off the one sitting on his lot ready for sale. You have a pamphlet that came with it that gives Lemon Law notices for most states if you think you want to pursue that. Be extremely careful to follow each step in that process, including your state statutes and the contractual terms with Chrysler or your claim may be denied. I'd strongly advise getting an experience consumer protection attorney (hard to find) to help with that process if I was heading in that direction (and I'm a lawyer - I don't do that work - but I'd find someone that did!) Do not delay if you are headed this way. I didn't head this direction because I love the vehicle and badly want to drive a Jeep and a diesel. I had a diesel Liberty several years back that I loved also. I had several troubles but my dealer and Chrysler always came through, given time. On that one, when they had it past the Lemon Law time frames, Chrysler gave me a full extended warranty to 100,000 miles. That certainly gave me added confidence. After they got through the problem though, which was early on, it had no further problems. Good luck with it.

I was in the market for a new GC diesel until I heard of all these common Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel problems. My local Jeep dealer service manager told me to stay away.

Unfortunately,Consumer Reports rates Jeep as the #2 most unreliable brand (second to Fiat). They recommend staying away from the GC diesel until thsee issues are fixed.

This car will be driven by my wife with a 6 month old and a three year old. A warranty is nice but is useless when your wife and children are stranded on a dark highway. My current '12 Dodge Durango has had 11 warranty fixes (First one was limon lawed). I've had to take days off of work to make dealer service trips. Who has time for that? I've driven other brands that had zero warranty trips.

Although there are very attractive now, I cannot trust my family's safety in a Chrysler product. Goodluck to all of you.

Just an update from this issue. Received a call from dealer on Wednesday that they need to replace the high pressure fuel pump, all injectors, drain fuel lines, etc because the pump is falling apart and shavings got in the injectors. Parts are on back order so no time frame for receiving vehicle.

Requested them to provide an SUV loaner but they said they don't have that and was told to call jeep. Called jeep customer care and provided history as the dealer never opened a case even though I had asked when the vehicle went in the 4th time. Customer care authorized to get a comparable rental.

My fear now, is what damage may have been caused to the engine? This has me now thinking of going the lemon law route. A lot of confidence has been lost.

latest update since CEL was addressed and most recent updates completed. New service department replace cat converter.
We just returned from an 1800 mile trip, pulling our 6,000 RV/trailer.
NO cel!!!
We also averaged 15 mpg when pulling and exceeded 29 mpg for 200 miles when not pulling last week.
Love the new Bluetooth scanner and iPhone app.

Is there an iPhone OBD scanner app? Please see note below.

CEL came on before the first oil change! I've asked about bad cat, DEF injector crystals, and everything else I've read on this forum---very excellent by the way, well done to everyone---the OBD is throwing conflicting codes of "too rich" and "too lean." So now they're going to put a "jumper harness" to "hook up with the module." This is coming via my wife whose Head is already spinning cuz her $40,000+ car is broken--already. Has anyone heard of this " jumper harness" business? Sounds hinkey to me...and a temporary fix to get us out of their faces. They gave started a STAR case... What does that mean? I've worked on my trucks for years--417,000 on my personal PowerStroke, but I'm out of my element here.

Update 1551---PCM software was corrupt...get to pick it up today....will keep y'all in the loop.

I was traveling to Southeastern NC and lost the DEF injector en route. The next morning, I dropped it off at the dealer in Wilmington. They told me that my DEF injector into the CAT had worked itself loose and came unattached. It needed to be replaced and they had to order the part from location unknown. Three days later the part arrived and was installed. We drove it around town for about 250 miles when the check engine light went on. I took it directly to the dealer again. This time it needed a new CAT. The closest one was in GA. They were going to ship it up. Come to find out the part out of GA was incorrect so they overnighted a new CAT from COLORADO.
Less than 100 miles later, the check engine light came on and nearly sent me into orbit. I went straight to the dealer and the young man tried to clear the code and send me on my way. I insisted that it would come on again and they needed to fix whatever had tripped the code. There is a new sensor en route this time... I will keep you posted...

Absolutely love the car.

I'll add to the list. I took delivery of my '14 JGC ecodiesel overland, in Nov '13. No problems at all until the dreaded P20EE light came on at about 17k. made an appt, but the light extinguished in about 100 miles, so cancelled. The light then reilluminated and extinguished itself about every 100 - 300 miles. came on steady at about 20k. took it to the dealer. they said it needed the Oct update. that worked for about 200miles. back in. dealer says DEF injector is clogged with crystals. ordered a new injector. today, he told me that they've another diesel JGC with identical issue, and they're going to try the injector on that one, and let me know the outcome. I plan to provide the results from this forum, and suggest ordering a new cat.
as an aside, I drive about 60 miles daily round trip commuting. have averaged 26.8 consistently til the Oct update and now I'm down to 24.8. I suspect it could be the DEF issue. With pure highway driving without towing, I've had 32 mpg. Hoping to regain the mpg.

P20EE code at approx. 3500 mi. Cleared code. Reappeared at 7400 mi, yesterday. I have not been to the dealer. Purchased in September, so no software updates.
I drive this vehicle hard. I'm curious to see how it is after a software flash. The car has little opportunity for anything to get gummed up. I always service my own vehicles, and figured I would take care of most issues with the GC and hoped to never go to the dealer without knowing exactly what the problem is. I did purchase the factory service manual as I have with all my vehicles. (I did try to get an appointment at the dealer today and they couldn't see me for 2 weeks!)

Sorry people are having issues here. Maybe with these issues, put your foot in it every once and a while. No excuses for any of this. The fact that many of the dealers suck isn't helping.

Short Volvo Turbo story: My colleague has a T60 with 172k mi and the dealer says he needs a cat. ($2400). We are going Boston up to Maine and he is going 60 mph. I said let's beat this thing to the client site and see if we can't "fix" the cat. Did a bunch of 40-90 full throttle, he got a bit carried away and went a little over a buck a few times. We did not clear any codes. 2 days later the engine light went off for good. So for an extra 3 gallons of gas we "fixed" the problem. :)

After round trip Dallas to Austin, the CIL came on... agian....took it to a Dallas dealer, got the 12/19 flash update.....CIL came on 2 hrs after picking it up.....new cat orderd! Hopefully this will be, as believed, THE fix...will keep y'all posted...kudos to the Dallas guys for pulling the trigger rather than jack around for another round of flashes...I truely believe this engine is a beast...Banks has purchased a bunch of them to design their answer to the Army's RFP for the Humvee replacement...best of all is I'm looking forward to the Banks line of mod's once the GC is out of warranty and can strip all this EPA crap off...

Update:
The dealer updated the software to address the fault code. I also had a small oil leak around the lower oil pan seal. They resealed the pan, I put the oil filter and oil in the back. They also did the visor recall. They did not reset the oil life monitor and I did find a air box hose clamp that wasn't tightened. (Not a huge deal, it wasn't going anywhere).
They did get me back the vehicle the same day, which I thought was impressive since they were slammed. I have driven about 4000 mi since the flash, it seems to have done the trick. This was my first service visit anywhere since 2002. They were pretty good. I did bring in a detailed sheet of what was wrong including a pic of the oil leak.

My saga continues along many of you...
I reported on the 19th my mil light went off after 5 days and all seemed ok despite the code reading P20EE
Today, Def fluid was getting low so I added container and as soon as I started to drive the car, light illuminated and the message appeared about bad def and to see the dealer. Also received a new code: P2BA9
Those of you who are further along with these issues- what is the best course of action?
Updates:
12/29/14: dreaded count down light came on - 200 miles and car will not start thereafter.
Current mileage is at 13,000. I literally taped a note for the mechanic where scanner plugs in with notes from this forum! Asked to please order the parts now.
Appointment at dealer in morning...
12/30/14: pick up from dealer. Check engine light now off. They performed a number of the software upgrades.... They Report its fixed?
1/2/15: check engine light back on. After Approx 80 miles , Same P20EE code.
1/6/15: back to dealer , now ordering the cat but it's on back order with no date provided. Gave me a Dodge Dart to drive for now. Said the countdown could occur again. I Asked if they did a def flow test... But No response.

1/20/15: after been at dealer 2 weeks awaiting parts, Dealer now says fixed. Come and get it! Gee, I get to turn in the Dart :) . I'll report back with what was replaced besides cat and oxygen sensors...

I've had the same check engine light and code errors that everyone else has had with the DEF system. After multiple trips to multiple dealerships in OCT-NOV 14 we finally were able to get the problem fixed (at least after several thousand miles there has been no check engine lights). The final fix was the replacement of the catalytic converter, which the dealership had to remove from a new JGC on their lot because it was apparently backordered.

I'm currently fighting with Jeep to get credited for a $200 service that the original dealership charged me for replacing the DEF fluid and cleaning the tank, which they said was the wrong type of DEF. Basically they told me that I had to use MOPAR DEF or nothing. Which BTW is incorrect because the manual states that I can use any DEF that complies with specific ISO standards, and in the end the DEF fluid replacement did not fix the problem because the check engine light came on again several days later.

My issues with my 14 JGC ecodiesel are similar to everyone else on this thread, and after much trial and error in replacing parts on the DEF system, and months in service, the dealership finally replaced the catalytic converter and this has finally fixed the issue, with no problems for several thousand miles. Hope this helps those who may be having issues.

If the issue comes up again I am trading it in on any vehicle that is not made by Chrysler.

Thanks, may be light at the end of the tunnel? I'm awaiting for the back ordered Cat. Maybe another week...?
I'm now considering an extended warranty. I've always turned these down but this vehicle if kept for the long haul just might neede it! Especially with all the latest electronics as in all new cars.

I am basically a ditto head to all the previous comments. Started having issues back in June and been in and out of the deal ship with software updates. My Jeep has been at the dealership since Dec. 27th with me finally having to take the TSB about the catalyst replacement.

The dealership intially told me there was crystalization contamination which I laughed at... Had to let them know there was an actual dqevice to check for contamination...and again pointed out the issues with the catalyst The service advisor said he would relay that on...

My dealer simply ordered the converter and reset the code. It will be six weeks in two days. I reset the code whenever it comes up because I like to use remote start. Otherwise it will come and go at about 120 mile intervals with no apparent harm. I'm trying to keep the mileage down anyway by driving my other vesicle as much as possible. I would like the 3600 mile warrenty to last the full three years and the 80,000 on the emissions to last eight. I have drawn no conclusions as of yet. I think that when it comes time to hook my trailer up and drag it into the sunset hopefully this coming fall this will all be resolved. But I still do not understand why anyone would purchase the diesel JGC for any reason other than the fact a relatively small vehicle can tow a reasonably large trailer.

Okay. Adding my experience to the list here. 27,000 miles. Took delivery March 2014.

Full disclosure, I love this car. Flat out love it. Love the luxury, the uConnect, the adaptive cruise, the engine, the mileage, the comfort, love all of it. As a sports car guy, I never thought I could love an SUV, but I've bonded with the Red Bull.

Took it in for an oil change and recalls a week or so ago. Driving back from St. Louis on Sunday, check engine light comes on. Take it in for the zipties on the DEF cables this morning (planned) and diagnose the check engine light (unplanned). Dealer reported the DEF Injector was loose, triggering the light. They ziptied it up and cleared the code, sending me on my way.

I told him what I've seen here on the forum and expressed my concerns. They're very friendly. Instructed me to use any DEF I want as long as it's not expired.

We'll see how it goes.

I am so so so so disappointed in this vehicle. Of every single new car I have ever bought I have NEVER had issues at all.

After four trips in as many weeks to the dealer for the MIL issue, they FINALLY determine that they have to replace the catalytic converter. Okay.. No biggie.. Yeah. it was on backorder. And do you think that the dealership will CALL us when it's in? I have to do all their legwork.

So we get that scheduled to be changed out this coming Monday. And then on Wednesday we added the DEF because I needed it. Hubby got the right stuff; we checked. What do we get? Incorrect DEF see dealer error.

If this replacement catalytic converter doesn't work, I am going to have to really really stand my ground with the hubby and get another vehicle.

AggiePate,

Download the Texas Lemon Law. It has a log where you put dates, problems, etc. and lines out the process. My son is in Dallas with the same issue ETA on his cat is next week. The morons ordered the wrong one when he was to have gotten it replaced this past Monday. I don't guess it matters where you are, but the Dallas boys were at least quicker to pull the trigger on the cat being the issue. The brainiacs in Austin were in a fog.

Hey @2014ECODiesel - it's like pushing a wet noodle up a very very large hill. You call the 800# which will take your info and pass you along to a Jeep (Chrysler) Resolution team member. All they will do is call the dealership your getting serviced from to "resolve" the issue and usually request you get a rental. Our JGC Summit has been in 14 times, new transmission pump valve box, after that complete transmission replacement, 4 transmission re-trainings, Replaced a crack fuel line (after 10th visit and 8K miles it was finally discovered).

My advice, if you are still in the milage and time range, grab the blue and white booklet that should be with your owners manual. It describes all the different states lemon laws. If your covered still, fill out the little card and send it in to start arbitration. You can also go here: www.ncdsusa.org and you can start filing the forms for arbitration.

I've wasted weeks possibly months of my life starting in July 2014, battling with the Chrysler Resolution team and the local dealership, my advise skip that void of uselessness and go straight to a 3rd party arbitration and secure a Lemon Law attorney.

Here is the number for the Resolution team should you want to just explore, but I warn you, they are useless and will only insult you with delay tactics and unresponsiveness. As of this writing one supervisor name I have is Rosa, I'd ask for her right away if you feel your not making progress with whomever they assign to your case. Best of luck!

I'm back in the shop. They'd replaced the catalytic converter and other parts last fall and all fine until now. Ck Eng back on. They discovered that DEF has a 1 year shelf life. All my DEF has been dealer filled. No outside. They put in new DEF and they drove quite a bit. I went to pick it up and when starting it in dealer lot it came up immediately with the drop dead, "won't restart in 185 miles." They are sending it to another more experienced dealer now. My dealer has been great trying to solve it and help.
